What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the skilfull use of music and musical elements by an accredited Music Therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. Music has nonverbal, creative, structural and emotive qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication, and personal development (CAMT, 1994).

Who can benefit from Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is an effective intervention for persons with developmental and physical disabilities, autism, dementia, substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, acquired brain injury, learning disabilities and communication disorders. The universal appeal of music enables people of all ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities to particiapte in Music Therapy.

How do I become a Music Therapist?

Music Therapy programs are offered at university level and include intensive study in areas of music, psychology and application of Music Therapy techniques with various client populations.

Graduates achieve an Honours Bachelor in Music Therapy (B.M.T.) or a Masters of Music Therapy (M.M.T.) degree from a university approved by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT).

Music Therapists may apply for Accreditation (M.T.A.) through the Canadian Association for Music Therapy upon completion of academic requirements, a 1000 hour internship, and the submission of documents supporting the candidate's educational, clinical and philosophical development.
